1. General introduction:

The Department of English Language and Culture (DELC) was established in March 2015 along with the establishment of the Faculty of Foreign Languages (SFL). However, the Department had a long history of development before that. Before August 2008, the Department was called the English Department under the School of Education, Can Tho University (CTU). After 2008, CTU established the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, the English Department was separated into 02 Departments: the Department of Foreign Languages (in charge of the training program of English Language and French Language) administered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, and the Department of English Education under the School of Education. In 2011, the Department of Foreign Languages was separated into the Department of English and the Department of French. In March 2015, CTU established the School of Foreign Languages for the development strategy of the university, the Department was merged to the School of Foreign Languages (SFL), and renamed the Department of English Language and Culture.

The main function of DELC is to train students of the English language program (program code: 7220201) with two majors in English Language and English Translation and Interpretation, and the English Language major in the High-Quality program (program code: 7220201C). Along with the three above programs, DELC is also in charge of teaching English language for distance training programs, second degree programs; and in charge of the academic program of the English language major training in Hoa An area (under the administration of the Faculty of Rural Development). In addition, the Department also provides professional support to the foreign language training programs of the National Foreign Language Project, and the graduate programs of CTU.

Every year, the DELC receives volunteers and experts from international English teaching organizations from the US, UK, Australia, Belgium, and Thailand to teach for the English language programs. With the development of international cooperation of SFL, DELC has also sent delegations of English language students to join cultural exchange programs and study tours to Thailand under the short-term study scholarship scheme of CTU for students with the best results; and sent lecturers of DELC to visit other institutions exchange teaching and management experiences, present and participate in international conferences in the UK, Australia, Belgium, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia.

2. Tasks – Functions:

 - Train full-time undergraduate program in English language (Code: 7220201) with 2 majors in English language and English translation and interpretation; and High Quality Program in English Language (Code: 7220201C).  

- Train undergraduate program in English language - distance learning mode, and second degree mode at Can Tho University and affiliated centers in the Mekong Delta.

- Participate in non-major English teaching programs for the university, teach English language competence training programs of the National Foreign Language Project, English language training programs for graduate classes.

- Research and transfer in the fields of linguistic science, educational science, interculturality, literature and translation.

-The blocks for admission entrance are D01, D14 & D15.

3. Organization:

The organizational structure of DELC includes the Department's Head and the Department's secretary as well as lecturers taking charge of the management of academic teams.

4. Teaching staff:

DELC consists of 24 full-time lecturers, including 04 Associate Professors, 08 PhDs, 16 Masters, 03 of them are doing PhD. The lecturers of DELC are trained in accordance with the language, culture and education major at qualified training institutions in Viet Nam and abroad. DELC also invites many experienced lecturers in teaching, former graduate students of SFL with solid professional qualifications and enthusiasm for teaching. In addition, every year, DELC also has volunteers and English experts from international organizations teach classes, exchange research, and carry out extra-curricular activities for students and lecturers of DELC.
